An allergen is a normally harmless substance which causes an immediate and abnormal hypersensitivity response of the immune system, or ‘allergic reaction’, in susceptible individuals.
Anaphylaxis is a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction. It affects more than 1 part of the body at the same time and requires immediate medical treatment and hospitalization. Anaphylaxis can be fatal.
