DEFINITION

Last update: 25/04/2025 [1]

Meat is, in principle, considered as skeletal muscle deriving from specified animal species, which may include edible offal and blood; the term meat does not include fish and seafood. Meat for human consumption, excluding poultry, generally refers to the flesh of mammals such as beef (cattle), pork (pigs), lamb (sheep), and goat. It encompasses cuts of meat from these animals that are considered suitable and safe for consumption by humans after proper cooking or processing. This definition typically excludes birds like chicken and turkey, which fall under the category of poultry. Meat provides essential nutrients like protein, vitamins, and minerals, contributing to a balanced diet for many people around the world.
